Too little too late.

Printables all the way now.

Thingiverse in 2022 is like an aging grandmother in the last stage of life.

We still love her and we still visit her. She has wonderful stories and always has something fun for the grandkids. But we know there's nothing we can do and we're not sure how much time she has left. It's been painful to watch the decline. We re-tell her stories so they are not lost when she goes.

She remembered your name today. Tomorrow, who knows.

Jesus that got dark.

She remembered your name today. Tomorrow, who knows

Funny thing is, no matter how many times i check "remember me" on Thingiverse, the next time I visit, dementia has kicked in .

u/xxcoder Aug 11 '22

Yep. My makes is still inaccessable. Still using printables

I use cults.

Is printables much better?

27

u/ImperfectDrug Aug 11 '22 edited Aug 11 '22 Heartwarming

Yes. You dont have to search too long on here to find out why Cults links are (I believe, still) banned.

Long story short Cults is run by Thieves and assholes. Prusa/Printables is run by a guy who cares about the community.

2

u/ThatFatGuyMJL Aug 11 '22

First I've heard about cults being run by thieves.

I've only ever heard good things.

Do you have an article/proof I can read?

8

u/ImperfectDrug Aug 11 '22

2

u/ThatFatGuyMJL Aug 12 '22

Well that's a bit shitty.

Is this a problem that occurred multiple times or just with them?

7

u/Cranifraz Aug 12 '22

It's happened enough times to illustrate that 'the rules' on cults are just what the owner feels like that day and that he'll retaliate if you make him angry.

It's not the behavior of someone you want to enter a business relationship with.

1

u/ThatFatGuyMJL Aug 12 '22

Understandable

Can you suggest any other sites with collection capabilities of a similar nature other than thingiverse?

5

u/ImperfectDrug Aug 12 '22

That's what we're suggesting Printables for.

-1

u/ThatFatGuyMJL Aug 12 '22

I've looked at printables and it seems... tiny. Barely 100k designs total compared to millions on other sites.

2

u/rentasmo Aug 12 '22

3 strikes man.

1

u/ImperfectDrug Aug 12 '22

From what I understand they’ve done things to get banned multiple times.

1

u/NimbusXLithium Aug 12 '22

Jim Jones loves that you use cults.

Printables is great though

-3

u/ThatFatGuyMJL Aug 12 '22

Hey dude I got recommended cults by reddit ages ago.

Sorry for not keeping up to date on a niche Internet communities politics while working 60+ hour weeks

1

u/NimbusXLithium Aug 12 '22

Nothing wrong with Cults, it's home for many great files. Just making fun of the name "cults"

I don't keep up with anything these days. I have about 10% knowledge with everything that interests me.

1

u/Iskelion Aug 11 '22

What's Printables?

5

u/roffinator Aug 12 '22

A platform for sharing 3D models, similar to thingieverse but newer and more modern.

And it is run by Prusa, so don't be surprised by their printers being a little more in focus sometimes ;)

1

u/Iskelion Aug 12 '22

Ah, I just checked it out, it doesn't have any of the models I would use (warhammer 40k) :(

1

u/roffinator Aug 17 '22

well, it is quite new in comparison to Thingiverse. but it growing quickly and getting a jump every time Thingiverse makes something weird in an update. so...maybe in a few months :)

2

u/Shoshke Aug 12 '22

Think thingieverse but better in every way.

It's a sharing site run by Prusa and is all in all a lot better a few key features that made it my default:

Much better UI and uploading a new model is easier, more streamlined and allows for more readable instructions on complex models.

The search function actually works and shows relevant models

Runs competitions that award filament and even printers, also really helps to put a spotlight on great creations.

You can earn filament just by using it, posting makes and models.

All in all it's built and run to be more active.

1

u/Iskelion Aug 12 '22

Just went there, but it doesn't seem to have many models, at least I didn't find them while searching "warhammer 40k"

2

u/Shoshke Aug 12 '22

That would probably have something to do with GW basically declaring war against 3D printing in general

1

u/Mathiacuus Aug 11 '22

This is the way

1

u/haitianboy420 Aug 12 '22

Came here to say this

1

u/mtjp82 Aug 12 '22

Need to check this site out.

1

u/TiltingAtTurbines Aug 12 '22

Printables really needs to get a handle on licenses, though. There are far far too many things that are reuploads by different people from Thingiverse and other sites but with the license changed. I see stuff regularly that is clearly marked as Attribution, No Derivatives, or Non-commercial on the original site (mostly Thingiverse, but a few MyMiniFactory or Cults3D), being uploaded by somebody else to Printables with a completely open license allowing anything.

1

u/Fun-Ad-5784 Aug 12 '22

Um I'm nee so not sure what the significance is, don't you get printable from Thingverse?

2

u/ImperfectDrug Aug 12 '22

Printables.com is a similar site to Thingiverse, but isn’t neglected and left on autopilot for low-effort ad revenue the way Thingiverse is.

1

u/Fun-Ad-5784 Aug 12 '22

Cool I haven't seen that one yet. I'll check it out, thanks!

-1

u/polopolo05 Aug 12 '22

Honestly printables has a ways to go. its still lacking

0

u/straycatstrut_ Aug 12 '22 Heartwarming

Yeah I just bought a Prusa i3 and decided to take a look at printables and I can't believe I ever used anything else. Using thingiverse or even cults feel like I'm searching Yahoo in 1999.

87

u/bytemage Aug 11 '22

Thingiverse is still inconvenient af.

7

u/nickydlax Aug 11 '22

What's the most convenient?

35

u/Cake_33 Aug 11 '22

Printables

5

u/ThisSubHasNoMods Aug 11 '22

How so?

9

u/GumberculesLuvThtGuy Aug 12 '22

Horribly broken search functionality for starters.

-7

u/A_Hale Aug 12 '22

Not broken, just poorly designed to begin with. Just googling a part I want with the thingiverse tag gets way better results.

2

u/Caligulas_Prodigy Aug 13 '22

If you have to use Google to find something on a site that has its own search bar, then the search bar is broken.

4

u/theneedfull Aug 12 '22

Having to login every time I want favorite something.

13

u/RevolutionaryJudge89 Aug 11 '22

Outdated UI/UX, absolutely trash and unmaintained comment sections, literally what’s good about it

2

u/A_Hale Aug 12 '22

Really I don’t feel like the things you mentioned are that inconvenient. The UI isn’t that bad. I find the site easily navigable, it has lots of content, the comments/remixes/builds are really helpful.

It’s not that printables isn’t better, but it’s still fine and I use it regularly without issue. I have no problem transitioning to a new site, but saying “literally what’s good about it” turns a blind eye to half of the features it pioneered and a lot of good content.

13

u/RevolutionaryJudge89 Aug 12 '22

Good things about Thingiverse:

  1. The content
  2. ???

3

u/Maximum-Incident-400 Aug 12 '22

searching for any model is a HASSLE, the fact that you need to use Google shows how bad it is

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '22

[deleted]

1

u/A_Hale Aug 13 '22

Ok that is pretty bad.

1

u/ThisSubHasNoMods Aug 11 '22

Oh interesting. I actually prefer the UI compared to other 3d printing sites. I don't ever use the comment section, so the only issue I've really had was the download all button not working.

41

u/unwohlpol Aug 11 '22

I finally moved to printables but good to know that 1 out of 1000 terrible bugs was fixed eventually... after how many months?

38

u/Amazingawesomator Aug 11 '22

My love/hate for thingiverse just got a little more love, hahahah.

That will be nice when i search on Thangs or Yeggi and get directed to thingiverse, tho.

8

u/scientistcowboy Prusa Mk3S+, MakerSelect v2, Flashforge Guider II Aug 11 '22

Great for when the only place I can find a model is on Thingiverse, but it is now my practice to avoid them whenever possible.

16

u/DaddyBops Aug 11 '22

There was a chrome extension that enables it. Been using it for ages.

Nice it's back tho

4

u/code-panda Aug 11 '22

That didn't work for new models right? Or am I thinking of that .zip url hack?

3

u/joshthehappy Prusa i3 MK3S+ MMU2S Aug 11 '22 edited Aug 12 '22

The one I use works fine, still prefer printables though.

2

u/code-panda Aug 11 '22

Printables is the best yeah

1

u/Kendrome Aug 12 '22

That still worked too.

13

u/dapperdave Aug 11 '22

Day late, dollar short - times a thousand.

1

u/MrAkutatillo Aug 12 '22

Ok Martin Brundle

15

u/randomname277 Aug 11 '22

Fuck Thingiverse still!

Can’t stay fucking logged in while people already travel to outer space. How hard can it be? There is just so much bullshit on that website and they never ever really cared until they finally started losing visitors. I will never revisit that fucking shitty site and I’m glad printables came up

3

u/EarlyBirdsofBabylon Aug 11 '22

Why was it removed in the first place?

5

u/Komm Prusa i3 Mk3 Aug 11 '22

It just broke.

1

u/Zeke13z Aug 12 '22 Table Slap

Yeah, almost like EA/Dice was developing it.

1

u/Bartholomeuske Aug 12 '22

Those greedy bastards would make you set up a 25$ monthly subscription for free models.

1

u/BFeely1 Aug 12 '22

They probably had to fix the adblocker blocker.

3

u/Itdidnt_trickle_down Aug 11 '22

Too late I haven't been there in months.

3

u/GojoPenguin Aug 12 '22

Yeah, but fuck them

10

u/pssssn Aug 11 '22

You've always been able to do this by replacing /files with /zip in the URL.

I wish we could just get a data dump of that site to some place else, like printables.

7

u/Page8988 Aug 11 '22

The /zip doesn't work with files that were uploaded after a certain date, though I don't know what that date is in particular.

10

u/unknown_lamer reprap Aug 11 '22

I'm pessimistic about the merger between Makerbot and Ultimaker (since now both are under the thumb of an evil megacorp that already ran Makerbot into the ground, and the only universal rule of mergers is that the workers and consumers get screwed while the capitalist do-nothing investors run off with increased profits from laying people off and raising prices while cutting quality), but the Ultimaker devs did say they wanted to get to work on Thingiverse if they could... hopefully my pessimistic attitude is wrong and this is the first of many fixes and improvements, because it would be a shame for Thingiverse to die completely (the alternatives are either worse with little focus on creating a digital creative commons, or at best have the same fundamental problem of being owned by capitalist for-profit corporations which ensures that eventually they will suffer the same fate, and then there's the terabytes of models that would simply disappear forever except on some data hoarder's hard drive somewhere).

6

u/holedingaline Aug 11 '22

We have four makerbots that I manage at work. I'd love it if Ultimaker Cura would add support for the makerbots and dump makerbot print to the curb. I swear the print preview in it operates in real-time.

9

u/-MB_Redditor- Aug 11 '22

It only took 2 years and the database search engine is still crap!!

3

u/rdp479 Aug 11 '22

If you type thingiverse into google you can use the google search bar below it. Sometimes it works better

8

u/ReasonAndDignity Aug 11 '22 Gold

So they messed up a useful feature only to restore it and we praise them for it? It's like the rabbi and the goat story. Can we all just drop Thingiverse and move to Printables? There's still like lots and lots of issues that have been present for years and have never been fixed. : /

2

u/mikeitstop Aug 11 '22

I don't disagree but honestly I'm not seeing a lot of praise in the comments here 😌

7

u/Mortimer452 Prusa i3 MK3 Aug 11 '22

Fuck Thingiverse.

6

u/Basher991 Aug 11 '22

Thank. God.

Some of the stuff I wanted to make has like 30 parts. It sucked to download them all separately and then put them in a folder myself

6

u/mikeitstop Aug 11 '22

I've definitely seen the number of separate files and moved on, on occasion.

18

u/ohlin5 Aug 11 '22

The 'rename /files to /zip' trick always continued to work for me

6

u/anglesideside1 Aug 11 '22

People still use Thingiverse?

4

u/rdp479 Aug 11 '22

Of course

3

u/The-Osprey Aug 12 '22

Don’t care lmao it still sucks fat ass. How is it that when I search up dog it gives me nothing even close to a dog… I didn’t ask for rocktopus I asked for Star Wars!

2

u/eatGreenOranges Aug 12 '22

The last model I uploaded a week ago still never showed up. It says I have 13 designs, but only 12 appear on the My Designs page. 😑

2

u/FurtumTuum User Flair Aug 11 '22

Praise the Lord lol

But does it download each individual file or is it a zip again?

3

u/mikeitstop Aug 11 '22

you can do either now

2

u/ltjojo Aug 11 '22

Thangs is the way.

5

u/Zeke13z Aug 12 '22

If they're smart they'd make a mirror link from www.thangiverse.com

1

u/westerngaming1 Aug 11 '22

Yay glad its back so much more convenient

1

u/Rhaski Aug 12 '22

Who's thingiverse?

1

u/Mataskarts Aug 11 '22

I only ever use thingiverse for weird/niche things like a floor mat push pin for the exact model of my car, it's not useful for anything else.

1

u/SpideySense13a Aug 11 '22

I just got used to changing the link /files to /zip

1

u/Furrymcfurface Aug 11 '22

/zip still works

1

u/lokiblackcat Aug 11 '22

Does it still randomly skips files? That was fun.

1

u/sme4gle Creality CR10-S | Creality Ender 3 Aug 12 '22

Wait, thingiverse still exists?

1

u/daemonfly Aug 12 '22

Oh, it'll break again. This isn't even close to being the first time.

1

u/frez_knee Aug 12 '22

Thingiverse, what’s that? /s

1

u/D1ngIeberry Aug 14 '22

You could always still download everything as a zip. Just add "/zip" to the end of the url and press enter. It will automatically download all of the files into a zip folder.

I still do this trick even with the new download all button as it gives me a pop up that wants me to disable my ad blocker.

0

u/PerfectDarkAchieved Aug 12 '22

Nice. It’s like they try to make it worse. At least they brought it back.
